I don’t know how many of you saw this Chrysler commercial, but I was moved by it. Detroit is the most maligned city on the planet. Disrespected. Mocked. Ridiculed. Pitied. Shunned. Avoided. We have been the butt of jokes from the national media for 30 years. I love the city of Detroit. I was born there. The world was changed by what happened in Detroit. The Motor City. Arsenal of Democracy. Now, like a boxer who has gone 45 rounds, the city is spent. But like Rocky, I can hear the city proclaim: “Hey, I didn’t hear no bell. One more round”. I sense the defiance of an underdog who just won’t go away. I feel the energy of a giant gathering his strength, and steadying himself to stand. I see a spiritual revival simmering under the surface that is ready to be uncorked.
Let the world laugh and have its fun at our expense. This city isn’t done yet. Yet again, the motto that is on the statue on Jefferson will be fulfilled:
Now the Lord is that Spirit. And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.
Amen. Let Freedom Reign in Detroit.
